Occasionally, I get visitors emailing me with questions. I try to answer everyone’s emails but sometimes I don’t have time (sorry if you are one of those). I want to share a question that I just got:

Do you think StumbleUpon is a good way to get traffic?

Answer:
Well, as many of you know, StumbleUpon is an internet community which allows users to discover new sites and is used by thousands of people. StumbleUpon can be a good source of traffic but usually the quality is poor.

What do I mean by poor quality? Visitors coming from StumbleUpon are not targeted traffic. They are coming to your site to just browse your content and have no interest in what you are promoting. They will only stay for a short period of time and will not likely return. These visitors are not apt to sign up for email or RSS feeds.

Also, traffic from StumbleUpon usually only last for a few days and then dissipates to almost nothing.

With that said, I believe that StumbleUpon is a great way to drive traffic to your site. It is a free source of traffic so why not use it!

I also believe that it is the site owner’s responsibility to convert the visitors to email subscribers or RSS subscribers. You need to do this by providing value on your site (quality content) which will cause people to come back to your site.
