I’ve seen some traffic from StumbleUpon but not a lot. You are right that you site only last a a short period. I guess to utilize anything to get more traffic is a bonus in my books.

I feel most of the readers coming from social networking sites are one time visitors.. they do not come back again and again but yes, if your blog is well designed and gives more and more information at homepage.. they might come back… i think, a blog owner should make all the posts accessible and visible to its readers…

I do agree that sometimes the traffic from stumbleupon is not very active, or not very focused, because they are just browsing. However, they are targeted, most of them, for if they weren’t interested in your targeted topic they would not visit your site.

Well, I’m not so much in SU nor I’m against it either. The only thing SU has helped my blog is to push my alexa ranking below 100K in the first 3 months. Good or bad? It’s a matter of personal experience.

If your site is about programming, and you make an article on C++, then many people who stumble into it, will probably be programmers or interested in c++, hence they DO come back. Though not as much as say someone who searched in google and found something, but it’s not that different at all.

“Stumblers” may not be targeted, but those that actually search categories looking for like minded blogs/articles are. This is why it’s so important to be sure to get the right category when stumbling up an article.

The traffic itself is not meant to be long term, and never was. It’s meant to bring (hopefully) large amounts to your blog in a day, maybe a couple and then as someone mentioned it’s up to your blog and you to keep them there.

The following as a general statement, not meant towards any individual – if stumble traffic is not converting, it’s you not SU.

I have to agree with Dennis on this. Although SU traffic is not targeted, it allows the blog to get more exposure. And whether you could convert the traffic into subscribers, its all up to how attractive your content is.

I haven’t used SU very well. I get very less traffic from SU. But once i got lot of traffic for 2 days. That i came to know, the traffic from SU just read that post or view the image and leave. They don’t look for other posts.

In a way it is bad because, they don’t become regular readers.

I agree that most of it is not very well targeted but as Dennis says some will be as they stumble in specific categories. With traffic like so many other things, it is a numbers game, and it all adds up.

I think the best thing about Stumbleupon is it can be a big ego boost to see your traffic jump up so high quickly.

I have found over the years the stumbleupon sends me pretty good traffic, but like you said its not targeted. Also, the visitors from stumbleupon usually do not visit other areas of the site- I usually see that they just view the page that was stumbled, then they venture on to the next site…

I had something stumbled on my site the other day and got 800 hits in an hour. Felt good, but that’s about it. It’s good for an ego boost. I don’t understand why everybody is so against stumbleupon traffic. I’ve always found it to be really good traffic, with a low bounce rate. I average over 2 and half minutes from them, and I’ve gotten over 5,000 visits from the site. I highly recommend the traffic, also, most of them have the alexa toolbar installed, and so it greatly helps your alexa ranking as well.

Targeted traffic is the only traffic that generates income in my opinion. As the comment from seowordsmith says, one needs to evaluate if it is income he or she is after or simply an ego boost. I have tried quite hard to get some traffic from SU, eventually got some but I have realized that it is quite hard to keep them longer on your site, many of SU users are not serious readers, they are always in a rush, so it is hard to monetize SU traffic.

Recently I noticed that the stumble traffic strength is reducing in terms of number of visits. This is despite the fact that same person, under the same category has stumbled. Did anyone else experience this problem?

I have been using SU for my site and other internet marketing sites as well. Though there are some things insignificant with this site, it still has a purpose in such a way that could boost traffic, just like any other social bookmarking sites. In the end we are still using them for the benefit of our sites.

I have had some limited success with stumbleupon and you can target the traffic to a point by placing your content in the right categories – that way people only intersted in your type of content will see it.

Interestingly it seems that the modest trickle that lingers seem to be stickier traffic. The early rush seams to have a lot of traffic with ) time on site but later traffic seems to stay longer. I think it’s worthwhile.

stumble upon is very good way to search required information as I think. I’ve used it for searching some information. It’s good and affective.

It is a good traffic. The reason why I say that is that lets say you receive 30,000 visits from Stumbleupon and 300 stayed thats good. Because now you have 300 loyal readers… Anytime you get a massive traffic from a huge social media site such as stumbleupon or digg this type of traffic is bound to happen. Your bounce rate will increase, but at the end of the day you will have more readers than you had.

Traffic from SU is always very unproductive for me, high volume low conversions. I’d prefer to get some great converting search engine traffic.

I used stumbleupon 2 month ago and site visits increased quickly. But conversation ratio is very less from SU visits.

It is a source of some free traffic, but not really quality traffic. Worth it if you need some quick traffic, but don’t expect to convert much of it to sales, if any.

I use stumbleupon to find sites in a particular topic. I don’t use it to find people who suggest the sites I find useful. Your ideas are ok _if_ your assumptions turn out to be correct. However, they wouldn’t be correct for my case and probably aren’t right for others either — but with close to 2 million users, even a few stumblers visiting yoursite would look like a lot in certain situations.

Targeted marketing of your website works a lot better in my experience.

Due to its very nature the conversion rate is not too high, they should be seen as a bonus rather than the best way to get fresh traffic.

Personally I have had some good success with StumbleUpon traffic. It is weak generalization to say that this traffic is only ‘browsing’. They are clicking through to your site because they have some kind of interest in your niche. As mentioned, it is up to your site to convert that traffic.

The good hing about stumble upon is you can get ranked in the search when you submit a page. Besides that, their traffic is a waste of time, I remember getting 1000 hits from them and zero conversions on my adsense and product.

What do mean by poor traffic quality? Does it mean that your conversion ratio was low.

It is quite common to get a temporary burst of traffic from stumbleupon or any other social bookmarking website. On sites like that, bookmarks get temporary popularity as others discover it too. The traffic isn’t necessarily low quality though. That is a weak generalization. If they clicked through to your site, they obviously have some kind of genuine interest in the topic.

It is very rare for any traffic source to be completely bad. Certain traffic may not generate as many sales, but it may still be helping you in other ways. Perhaps those people will help further spread the word.

My advice is, if you want videos, go to the source, where you can choose your next video from a list of videos that are related to the one you just watched…
